Types of Marine Anchors

Types of Marine Anchors

Mar 22,2022
An anchor is a device, usually made of extremely hard steel such as stainless steel. If your boat loses power, an anchor will keep your boat from danger, whether it hits a rock or shoal, or if a wave slams the shoreline. Therefore, qualified anchor chains and anchor accessories are particularly important. Good materials can greatly protect your safety when danger comes. Before that, let's take a look at what types of anchors there are.

Mushroom anchor

Very large mushroom anchors are used for mooring or securing buoys. Small mushroom anchors may be effective on the softest river bottoms but have little hold. They should only be used on personal watercraft, small aluminum fishing boats, or dinghies.

Danfoss anchor

This type of anchor is a good choice for small boats because it folds flat and is easy to stow, and has a lot of holding power for its weight. Its wide, sharp flukes sink into the sand and hard mud bottoms but are less effective in deep mud or grass. If the wind changes and the boat drifts past the anchor, then in the opposite direction it was set, the Danfoss anchor is free to pull.

Plow anchor

The plow anchor is slightly bulkier than the Danfoss and is a good choice if the anchor is held on the bow rollers rather than in the boat's anchor locker. The plow anchor has only one penetration point and is more likely to reset itself if the boat's position changes. It's more effective than the Danforth in light grass, if the grip is good, it can hold power on rocky bottoms, and it performs well on soft bottoms.

Claw anchor

This non-folding anchor is similar to a plow anchor but has a wider scoop shape for mud, clay or sandy bottoms. These anchors are also strong enough to hold on to rock bottoms. If the wind changes, the claw anchors will reset quickly. It may not be suitable for very hard bottoms or dense vegetation, which can be challenging for all types of anchors. This anchor is also best installed with bow rollers or windlasses.

Grapple anchor

Shaped like a grappling hook, the anchor has multiple tines or points designed to grab onto structures at the bottom — such as rocks or underwater wood — rather than sink into the bottom. The tines are usually folded up along the lower leg, making the anchor more compact for easy storage. In some models, the tines are designed to be curved to make it easier to retrieve the anchor when it is hooked on the bottom structure. The tines can be bent back to their original shape. Grab anchors are available in a variety of sizes, including very small models for Jon boats, dinghies, or small boats such as kayaks.

Different boats are suitable for different anchors, you can choose according to your boat type. If you have any questions about this, you can contact us and we will recommend the most suitable boat anchor for you.
